CBS Sports’ key inquiry for Florida football entering the 2026 season was whether lower expectations in Gainesville could be a good thing. The outlet examined the biggest questions facing each SEC team ahead of the conference’s media days this week.
“Jon Sumrall doesn’t know how to lose,” says national college football writer Brandon Marcello, who also suggests that UF’s reduced expectations could benefit the program in Jon Sumrall’s first year at the helm. Sumrall comes to Florida with an exceptional resume, averaging 10 wins per year as a head coach and reaching four straight conference title games.
“The rebuild at Florida is much more substantial than those he faced at Troy and Tulane, but after the misfire that was the Billy Napier era, might a surprise be in store for a beaten-down fan base?” he writes.
Many experts believe that the Gators could rise above tempered summer expectations and become a college football playoff dark horse. Others hold reservations about the team’s revamped roster, the unsettled quarterback competition, and the installation of two new systems on both sides of the ball.
“The roster still has plenty of talent, including former five-star receiver Vernell Brown, who called out teammates earlier this offseason during an intense workout,” Marcello continues.
Florida’s greatest advantage could lie in being underestimated. Talent has never been an issue for the Orange and Blue, with Billy Napier fielding a top-20 recruiting class in each of his four seasons. The previous regime was also able to draw marquee talent to Gainesville, securing commitments from five-star prospects like DJ Lagway and LJ McCray. The struggle came from an inability to translate talented rosters into on-field production.
A cultural reset under Sumrall and a renewed program identity could be exactly what Florida needs to gel this collection of highly-regarded players. SEC media days will provide a glimpse into Sumrall’s vision for rebranding and rebuilding the Gators.
