Airport security wait times across the U.S. appeared to return to normal Tuesday, March 31, a day after Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees began receiving paychecks amid the ongoing partial government shutdown.
President Donald Trump signed an order on March 27 redirecting Department of Homeland Security funds to pay TSA workers.

“Most TSA employees received a retroactive paycheck today that included at least two full paychecks covering pay periods 4 and 5,” Department of Homeland Security Acting Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Lauren Bis told USA TODAY.
More than 500 TSA officers have resigned since the shutdown began, raising concerns about staffing levels at airport security checkpoints nationwide.
Impacts at Florida airports have largely been minimal. Wait times at security checkpoints, including Tampa International Airport (TPA) and Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ), have remained relatively steady throughout the shutdown.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers, who were deployed to airports nationwide, including one in Southwest Florida, on March 23, continue to assist with passenger screenings.

Trump orders TSA workers to get paychecks during ‘unprecedented emergency situation’
In a March 27 memorandum to the secretary of Homeland Security and the director of the Office of Management and Budget, Trump said air travel has “reached its breaking point.”
“This is an unprecedented emergency situation. Currently, more than 60,000 Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees … are not being paid.
“Since the shutdown began, nearly 500 transportation security officers have left their positions, and thousands more have begun to call out sick at record rates due to lack of pay.
“As a result, security wait times at some airports have reached untenable lengths of three or more hours. These increased wait times, combined with declining morale among TSA staff, unacceptably heighten the risk of security vulnerabilities within our domestic travel system and has negatively impacted countless Americans.”
Trump directed federal funds “that have a reasonable and logical nexus to TSA operations” be used to pay TSA employees.
TSA employees were scheduled to receive paychecks starting on Monday, March 30.
