An officer with the Tallahassee Police Department was in the area of South Monroe Street and East Orange Avenue attending to another issue on June 7 when he heard gunshots.

He arrived on scene with another officer in the area of Kestner Street and headed in the direction of a large crowd, looking for injured people.

They found three in all with gunshot wounds and all were taken to Tallahassee Memorial.

A detective had spoken to one of the girls who was injured. She said she recognized the shooter as Akins, and that Akins had come to the party with someone else in a black Dodge Charger.

A friend of the victim spoke to police and said that she also knew Akins and the girl she was with. Prior to the shooting a fight broke out between the victims and Akins, when Akins then reached under her jacket, pulled out a gun and begin shooting.

All witnesses and victim provided similar stories of a fight breaking out before the shooting began, records show.

While on scene, officers came into the possession of a video circulating on social media which showed Akins fighting two black females and she is later thrown to the ground. The video continues, showing fighting, but then the sounds of a gun being loaded then fired are heard (Akins was no longer in view).

During the investigation, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office received a call from an unknown person sharing Akins’ location. Deputies headed out to the residence and found Akins and detained her.

Akins said she was standing outside of the business where the altercation took place for around 15 minutes when she observed a “big girl” running towards her. She dodged the girl and got ready to fight.

At some point in the fight Akins was knocked down and said she was being beating from “every direction” by multiple individuals when she saw her bag on the ground with her gun.

She said she “grabbed the gun from her bag, cocked it back and started shooting.”

Akins claims she did not intend to get involved in a fight but that she was “caught off guard” and in “fear for her life,” leading to her opening fire. She is represented by Tallahassee attorney Mutaqee Akbar, court dockets show.

According to court documents, this is a detailed outline of Akin’s actions according to the video:
