A Tallahassee man has been found guilty of a 2020 vehicular homicide that left one woman dead and a child with lifetime disabilities.
A local jury convicted Henry Wilson of vehicular homicide and reckless driving causing serious bodily injury, according to a news release from the State Attorney’s Office for the 2nd Judicial Circuit.
On March 8, 2020, just before 8 p.m., Wilson was driving west on West Tennessee Street with two passengers in his vehicle. Surveillance footage captured that Wilson was driving over 92 mph.
He passed White Drive, despite the speed limits of the road being 35 and 45 mph.
As he approached Dixie Street, he swerved to avoid running into a vehicle in front of him, causing his car to cross all lanes of westbound traffic and hit the curb. Afterward, his vehicle continued to travel down the sidewalk, ultimately striking a pedestrian who was walking a baby in a stroller.
The pedestrian, the baby’s grandmother, died from her injuries at the scene. The baby was taken to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital where he was treated for serious injuries. The baby survived but has lifelong disabilities, the release said.
Detectives with the Tallahassee Police Department conducted an investigation and extracted crash data records from Wilson’s vehicle, which showed he reached speeds of up to 96 mph in the five seconds before the crash.
The state was represented by Assistant State Attorney Rachel Jankowski. Wilson was represented by Assistant Public Defender Kurstin Phelps-Hernandez and the case was presided over by Judge J. Lee Marsh. Sentencing is set for Aug. 8.
