Both Central Florida softball teams possessed a flair for the dramatic in their Tallahassee Regional openers.
Fourth-seeded Stetson stunned host Florida State 8-3, controlling the whole game after snatching a 2-0 lead in the second inning on May 15. The Hatters crushed two homers and were spearheaded by Amber Chumley’s four RBIs during their second NCAA Tournament victory in program history.
Later in the afternoon, UCF failed to muster a run until it was down to its final strike. After a Beth Damon RBI single tied the score 1-1 in the seventh inning, the Knights walked it off with a Coco Jaimes single up the middle in the eighth.
Their rewards? A battle against each other.
Stetson and UCF will wage war at noon on May 16. The winner will head to the finals on May 17. The loser will face elimination in a second Saturday game against the winner of Florida State vs. Jacksonville State.
During the regular season, the Knights edged the Hatters 5-3 in Orlando.
