City of Tallahassee crews responded to yet another sizeable release of untreated wastewater after a force main leak at a city water reclamation facility on Capital Circle Northeast.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection issued a pollution notice after the leak occurred around 7:40 a.m. Oct. 8 at the T.P. Smith Water Reclamation Facility, 1876 Capital Circle Northwest.
“The leak resulted in the release of approximately 12,000 gallons of wastewater, which flowed into two separate stormwater catch basins along CCNE, where crews were able to make successful recovery,” DEP said. “The impacted area has been cleaned, disinfected, and deodorized. There were no impacts to surface waters.”
The department added that a total of 95,000 gallons was recovered during the cleanup and repairs of the main are ongoing and snarling traffic.
The outside southbound lane of Capital Circle NE from Care Drive to Capital Medical Blvd was closed for hours for the sewer repairs causing congestion for drivers during the evening commute. Westbound Centerville Road was also down to one lane at Potts Road.
The sewage leak comes days after a nearly 1,800 gallon overflow of wastewater on Oct. 3 into a nearby stormwater ditch near Fleetwood Street in south Tallahassee.
Thomasville Road gets gridlocked by utility repairs
Northbound lanes of Thomasville Road were also backed up with a stalled car in a traffic lane and city construction in northeast Tallahassee. “Due to necessary underground utility work, the outside northbound lane of Thomasville Road at Killarney Way is closed for roughly the next 6 hours,” the city posted at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday.
As of 6:45 p.m., traffic was backed up from Kerry Forest Parkway south to around Metropolitan Boulevard.
