For the first time in more than 30 years, when the referee tosses the coin to determine before the start of Super Bowl 60, the coin won’t have been made in Florida.
It will have been altered here, though. In honor of the country’s 250th anniversary, the Highland Mint in Melbourne, which has produced the Super Bowl coin since 1994, will be altering a special coin provided by the NFL.
“In honor of the 250th anniversary of the nation, a restrike of one of the most iconic medals in American history, the Libertas Americana, will serve as the official coin for the Super Bowl LX coin toss,” said Vince Bohbot, longtime executive vice president of the Highland Mint. “Originally commissioned by Benjamin Franklin in 1782, the medal celebrates America’s victory in the Revolutionary War.”
After the coin toss, the medal will be presented to the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History as a gift to the nation.
Here’s what to know.
Who designs the Super Bowl coin?
Usually the NFL provides the design, Bohbot said. This year the coin will be the special 1776 Libertas Americana coin.
The traditional flip coin is about the size of a silver dollar. Each 1.5-inch diameter coin is individually numbered and protected in an acrylic capsule to preserve its condition and presented in a custom booklet case, allowing admirers to flip the center page to view both sides.
Each coin’s base metal is copper that is fine silver-plated and flash plated with 24 karat gold.
What did referees use before the Super Bowl coins were minted?
What was the NFL using before the Highland Mint began providing coins?
“That’s a question that nobody really knows the answer to,” Bohbot said. “It was a quarter or a silver dollar, whatever the referee had in their pocket. And I think that’s where the NFL decided to make it official. And it really gained traction.”
A company called Balfour had the license to mint Super Bowl coins but they used Highland Mint to actually mint them.
“We happened to be an NFL licensee as well and at one point, the NFL asked us to take over and be the official licensee so we’ve been a licensee of the NFL now for over 30 years,” Bohbot said.
The Highland Mint produced its first Super Bowl flip coin for Super Bowl 28, on Jan. 30, 1994, when Dallas faced Buffalo. (It was “tails.”)
Should I bet on heads or tails?
One of the most popular bets of the game (besides who won) is on the results of the coin toss. Coin tosses are random and generally work out about 50-50. Over the past 59 Super Bowls, “tails” has held a slight edge over “heads” at 31-28.
Since Highland Mint coins have been used, they’ve come up “tails” 19 times and “heads” 13 times. Over the past four Super Bowls, it has alternated, heads in 2022, tails in 2023, heads in 2024 and tails in 2025. The longest streak has been for “heads” — five consecutive years from 2009-13.
Do the winners of the coin toss usually win the Super Bowl?
This year, the New England Patriots will face the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl 60 for the first time since they squared off in Super Bowl 49. Then, the Patriots called heads and it was tails, so Seattle won the toss.
The Patriots won the game, though. In fact, the coin toss winner has a 26-33 record in the first 59 Super Bowls, so maybe don’t read too much into it.

What happens to the Super Bowl coin? Can I get one?
“We’ll ship coins zero to 100 to the NFL,” Bohbot said. “We’ll ship them to NFL on-field operations and then they take care of distributing them.”
Coin No. 00001 is traditionally used for the flip before the game. If the game goes to overtime (it’s happened twice), the artist’s proof coin, officially known as Coin Zero, has been used.
This year, if the Patriots-Seahawks matchup goes to overtime, coin No. 00001 will be used.
For years, coin No. 1 went to the Pro Football Hall of Fame at Canton, Ohio. More recently, the NFL has been auctioning them off for charity. That will still be the case with this year’s coin No. 1, but not for the Libertas coin.
The other 9,900 are sold to the general public.
“That’s a limited edition of 10,000 coins, and the coin is minted just like a real currency,” Bohbot said. “It’s silver plated and it has 24 karat gold highlights.”
Fans of the Patriots and Seahawks — and everyone else, of course — can order their own coins at highlandmint.com for $99.99, while they last.
