MORENCI – Sammy Miller took the pressure off Terry Pant.
“I was getting ready to pull him out because we had a big lead,” said Pant, Whiteford’s baseball coach. “My assistant coach came over to me and said, ‘You’re going to pull him when he’s throwing a no-hitter?’ I said, ‘I’ll talk to him.’”
Pant did that and agreed to let Miller continue.
The junior returned to the mound for the fifth inning and quickly gave up a pair of hits, giving his coach the freedom to change pitchers.
It was a day for Whiteford pitchers.
The Bobcat baseball and softball teams both swept Morenci, on a day that featured two no-hitters a 1-hitter and three shutouts.
The baseball team beat Morenci 14-0 and 17-3.
The first game featured a no-hitter by Caden Schroyer.
“He had a pretty good game,” Pant understated. “He pitched well, but didn’t have a lot of strikeouts. The defense played well behind him.”
Schroyer also let his bat do some talking.
The senior had three hits along with long with Tre Eitniear and Luke Henegar as the Bobcats improved to 5-2.
“We’ve made some mistakes,” Pant said of his team’s start. “Our two losses have been when we kind of beat ourselves.”
The softball team posted a pair of 10-0 victories.
Peyton Welch tossed a 1-hitter in the first game with 15 strikeouts.
Freshman Macy Ovall fanned 12 while twirling a no-hitter in the second.
“They were pretty impressive,” said softball coach Matt VanBrandt. “Their work in the offseason really paid off. It’s a lot of fun when you see that.”
Offensive standouts were junior Avy Wood and freshmen Alexis Willians and Kinsley Anderson.
The Bobcats are off to a 7-2 start.
“We’re still young and making some mistakes, but it’s fun to watch them make mistakes and grow,” VanBrandt said.
MONDAY’S TOP PERFORMERS
SOFTBALL
Sierra Daniels, Monroe: Drove in six runs and scored six times while gathering five hits in a 16-1, 10-0 sweep of Ann Arbor Skyline. Ally Lewis added four hits and drove in four runs. Delaynee Miller and Jozie Willie added three hits each and Soffia Elmer drove in four runs for the 8-0 Trojans.
Maria Robbins, New Boston Huron: Went 3-for-3 to pace a 14-hit attack during a 16-1 victory over Jefferson. Maya Martindale, Sasha Pender, Ava Russo and winning pitcher Madison Kuzara added two hits each. “We put balls in play all game,” Huron coach Tedi Belisle said. “I was happy with their approach at the plate all game.” Molly Hayford drove in Jefferson’s run.
Addison Skinner, Gibraltar Carlson: Scattered five hits in a 3-2 victory over Trenton. Emilee Konkus went 3-for-3 to lead the offense and Aubrey Iwasko drove in two runs.
Kaitlyn Kwiatkowski and Sophia Steinman, Bedford: Logged five hits each as the Mules beat Dexter 11-3 then lost the second game 7-3 in nine innings.
BASEBALL
Cameron Cole, SMCC: Delivered a strong performance on the mound to spark a 3-2 win over Riverview. Ryan Hayden and Grant Potcova led the offense with two hits apiece with Lukas Linzell drove in two runs for the 7-3 Falcons. “We did not play our best game today, but I hope it’s a good sign of things to come if we can clean up our play,” SMCC coach Jared Janssen said.
Noah Banas, New Boston Huron: Rapped two doubles among his three hits during an 11-0 rout of Grosse Ile. Cash Moczydlowsky and Tyler Gray split the shutout and Owen DeLano added two hits.
Ryan Burgor and Cale Jones, Airport: Racked up three hits each during an 11-5 conquest of Flat Rock. Jack Baker and each added a pair of hits. Nick Hodge drove in three runs and David Riddle recorded two hits for Flat Rock.
Evan Bullard, William Gillespie and Hudson Heams, Bedford: Provided strong pitching, but the Mules managed just four hits in 4-0 and 3-0 losses to Dexter. The Mules dipped to 7-2.
BOYS TRACK AND FIELD
Alex Mapes and Masyn Moran, Bedford: Both were double winners in a 72-65 victory over Ann Arbor Pioneer. Mapes swept the hurdles and Moran won both throws. Brody McCloud (high jump), Cain Cole (pole vault) and Henry Albring (long jump) completed a sweep of first place in all of the field events. The Mules captured the top six places in the long jump, took 1-5 in both throws, the first four places in the high jump and the top two in the pole vault.
Andrew Bell and Anthony Tamahkyarov, Airport: Both ruled two individual events and were part of a winning relay during a 67-61 victory over Milan. Bell was first in the 800 and 1,600 meters and Tamahkyarov topped the 100 and 200. Airport also got wins from Holden Otter (shot-put), Jaxson Nichols (discus) and Axel Thompson (high jump). Braeden Larette took the low hurdles and long jump and was part of the winning 1,600 relay for Milan. Other victoriious Big Reds were Landon Talladay (400), Aiden Blackwell (high hurdles), Johnathan Ringbloom (pole vault) and Mason Martin (3,200).
GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD
Helen Brady, Bedford: Took first place in the shot-put and discus during a 104-33 loss to Ann Arbor Pioneer. Tayah Croley was the long jump champion.
Kaily McDaniel and Angelina Wilson, Milan: Each won a pair of individual events to lead a 71-43 victory over Airport. The Big Reds also won the 100 with Avery Mitchell, the discus with Addison Ostrom and the pole vault Hailey Ringboom. Airport triumphs came from Ella Baker (1,600), Olivia Kemp (shot-put), Jaela Watson (high jump) and Olivia Swope (long jump).
BOYS GOLF
Bradey Kozlowski, Bedford: Took 13th place in the Saline Hornet Invitational with a 79. Teammates Nolan Fischer and Julian Pirrone carded 83 and 84, respectively, as the Mules finished 10th in the team standings with 341. Solomon Schramm of Monroe shot 86 and New Boston Huron’s Brendyn Raschke 98.
Cade Wasner, SMCC: Shot a 47 at Monroe Golf & Country Club for the third-lowest score of the day during a 187-202 loss to Grosse Ile.
SUNDAY’S TOP PERFORMERS
SOFTBALL
Alli Schrader, Ida: Went 3-fo-3 to lead Ida in a Pink Out victory over Dundee 3-2. Ameilia McCoy was 1-for-2 and scored twice and she and Alex Haws combined on a 5-hitter. Dundee’s Annalyse Lay went 2-for-3 and Abby Marek was 1-for-2 with two walks.
