Five players enter Round 2 of the 2026 St. Jude Championship with a share of the lead. Two could really use a victory to continue their run in the season-ending FedEx Cup playoffs.
Jordan Spieth and Michael Kim, who entered Memphis ranked No. 54 and 61 in the FedEx Cup standings, respectively, both shot 5-under 65s in the first round. Their sterling starts rocketed them not only into safety to make next week’s leg of golf’s postseason, the BMW Championship, but currently at Nos. 22 and 24, they’d be in position to qualify for the Tour Championship.
There’s a lot of golf left to play at TPC Southwind though, and with temperatures staying in triple digits through the weekend, finishing in the top 50 is going to be a challenge. Michael Thorbjornsen, Jake Knapp and Kurt Kitayama also enter play today atop the leaderboard. A group of seven including Tommy Fleetwood, Chris Gotterup and Sungjae Im, who also needs a strong weekend to stay in the playoffs, is a stroke behind. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy will try to improve from his horrid 4-over Round 1 in his second day partnering with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (three shots off the lead).

Scottie Scheffler ties St Jude Championship record
He doesn’t have to worry about the playoff bubble as the No. 1 player in the FedEx Cup standings, but Scottie Scheffler has had a down year by his lofty standards with just one victory. That might be changing as he’s opened his second round with five straight birdies. He drained a 20-foot putt on the par-4 second before three straight approaches landed within 5 feet of the cup.
Scheffler went on another run in the back nine, birdieing four of the last six holes to tie the course record with a 9-under round of 61. At 11 under for the tournament, he’s three strokes ahead of Sungjae Im, whose 4-under round got him to 8 under for the tournament.
Robert MacIntyre withdraws from St Jude Championship
About 2½ hours before his scheduled Round 2 tee time Friday afternoon, Robert MacIntyre withdrew from the St. Jude Championship with a knee injury, the PGA Tour announced. MacIntyre had a disastrous first round, shooting a 12-over 82 that included three double bogeys and a triple bogey on the par-4 sixth. He shot eight more strokes than the second-worst player in Round 1, Rory McIlroy. The Scotsman entered the tournament 31st in the FedEx Cup standings; he’s considered safe for next week’s BMW Championship in 36th place for now.
