A fatal accident claimed the life of an 86-year-old Fort Myers man.
The accident happened Friday afternoon on State Road 80 in Lee County.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the man, who was not identified, turned left in front of an oncoming vehicle, west of Iozzi Court, near Buckingham Road. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
The man who died was driving a Hyundai Accent, which was struck on the right side by the approaching vehicle, a Ford work van. It was driven by a 43-year-old Alva man, who was not injured in the crash.
The crash occurred at about 3:30 p.m., near the peak-risk window of 4 p.m. on weekdays.
Traffic fatalities have been trending down in Lee County.
As of Aug. 8, the Florida Highway Patrol reported 7,992 crashes in the county, including 29 classified as fatal.
Last year, there were 105 fatal crashes in the county.
State Road 80, also known as Palm Beach Boulevard, remains one of the county’s deadliest and most crash-prone roads.
