St. Augustine will unveil a new Little Library at Project SWING, a park at 25 W. Castillo Drive, on Sept. 26 at 10 a.m.
Commissioner Cynthia Garris and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity brother Sherman Riley, the champions behind the Little Library, will lead the ceremony, which is open to the public. Those present will also include members of the Sigma Pi Lambda Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.
Ketterlinus Elementary School’s third-grade class will be on site to add books to the Little Library box.
The Little Library Box will be hand-painted by Jessica Bryce, of Bryce Brushworks, in dedication to St. Augustine’s own Dr. Otis Mason and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who were both members of a fraternity.
The Little Library is part of one of the fraternity’s national programs, “Go To High School, Go To College,” and aligns with their Splendid Gents Mentoring Program, which focuses on guiding middle school boys toward positive development and academic success.
About Alpha Pi Alpha, Sigma Lambda Chapter
The Sigma Pi Lambda Chapter is a chartered local branch of the of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. Founded in 1906 at Cornell University, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity is the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American men.
Chartered on July 27, 2019, Sigma Pi Lambda serves Florida’s First Coast region, which includes St. Johns, Clay and Duval Counties. The chapter is committed to upholding the fraternity’s national programs and special initiatives including voter engagement, mentoring, education, elder care, community service and scholarship awards.
About Project SWING
Built in 1997, Project SWING is a park located at Francis Field, across from the Historic Downtown Parking Facility. The acronym stands for St. Augustine’s Wish for Its Next Generation. The 23,000-square-foot playground includes park equipment such as a parallel bar, a pavilion, slides, swings, tire swings and various interactive play/exercise equipmenton wooden forts and towers.
