Sporting Jax men's soccer skid continues in Charleston shutout

Battered by Battery: The winless start dragged on for Sporting Club Jacksonville men’s soccer, going down a man to an early red card and losing 4-0 to the Charleston Battery on May 2 at Patriots Point in Charleston, S.C.

Swan swoops: One day before his 19th birthday, striker Colton Swan finished off crosses by Nanan Houssou and Nathan Messer to head goals in the 28th and 64th minutes for Charleston (4-3-1), which built a 3-0 lead by halftime against the undermanned Sporting Jax defense.

Red for Rose: Sporting Jax picked up its second dismissal of the season when left fullback Tyshawn Rose pulled down Charleston’s Maalique Foster on an 18th-minute breakaway and received an direct red card.

Charleston pulls away: Quick Battery passes carved open the defense for Foster to finish from six yards in the 32nd minute, and Kirill Pakhomov blasted a goal from outside the box off Foster’s assist just before halftime to hand Sporting Jax its heaviest defeat to date.

Quick free kicks: Sporting Jax (0-7-1) was officially credited with only one shot on target, by Emil Jaaskelainen in the 14th minute. … Zeke Soto, Wan Kuzain and former University of North Florida midfielder Luc Granitur came off the bench. … The physical contest included 36 fouls, 19 by Sporting Jax, and six yellow cards in addition to the red for Rose. … The team has now gone 478 minutes across all competitions since its last goal, scored by Jaaskelainen in a 3-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on March 28.
