Last-minute mishap: Sporting Club Jacksonville men’s soccer experienced another heartbreaker at the finish, when a deflected header rebounded off defender Antonio Gomez and into his own net in stoppage time to give Indy Eleven a 1-0 victory in the USL Championship on Aug. 15.
Painful finish: Sporting Jax (1-14-5) looked on course for a tie until the 92nd minute. Indy’s Cam Lindley lofted a cross from the left wing, Paco Craig headed it from a tight angle and the loose ball ricocheted off Gomez and into the net past Jacksonville goalkeeper Jake McGuire.
Blake back in town: Jack Blake, who played for the Jacksonville Armada in the North American Soccer League in 2017, played all 90 minutes in midfield for Indy.
Quick free kicks: Sporting Jax was outshot 19-5 and never managed to take an official shot from inside the penalty area. … Sporting Jax midfielder Raheem Somersall left the game due to injury in the 29th minute, replaced by Harvey Neville. … Canadian defender Marcus Godinho made his first start for the club. … Sporting Jax has now gone 351 minutes without scoring, since Ahmad Al-Qaq’s ninth-minute goal on July 18.
