Florida football fired coach Billy Napier after three-and-a-half seasons with the Florida Gators on Sunday afternoon. As a result, wide receivers coach Billy Gonzales will serve as Florida’s interim coach, according to multiple reports.
The announcement came a day after a white-knuckle win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs during homecoming in the Swamp. The 23-21 victory was something of a moral defeat, given MSU had lost 14 straight SEC games coming into the weekend.
Gator Nation had finally seen enough, and apparently, so had the program’s top brass and boosters.
Social media erupted with reactions ranging from relief and celebration to frustration and reflection moments after Napier’s firing. For most of the fan base, the news felt like the inevitable conclusion to a tenure that never lived up to expectations.
Here is how social media reacted to the Gators’ firing of Napier on Sunday afternoon following college football’s Week 8 action.
