Brevard County 70+ Men’s Softball team Slug-A-Bug recently played in two tournaments out west, winning both.
They started by winning a tournament in Nevada, the Mesquite Senior Games championship.
They played five games, winning the championship over Brantford Nissan out of Toronto, Canada, 20-12 in the finals to win the Gold Medal.
Leading hitters in the tournament were Matt Matson (.733), Nick LaDuca (.714), Pat Girard (.687), Rick Harder (.650), Tony Russo (.650), Terry McIlrath (.650), Dave Carden (.650) and Dan Lobue (.650).
After winning in Mesquite, the team traveled to St George, Utah, for the Huntsman Senior World Games.
After dropping their first two seeding games, Slug-A-Bug ran the table all the way to the championship game where they defeated the Cascade Thunder from Bend, Oregon, 12-8, to earn the Gold Medal.
Matt Matson again led the club hitting (.800). Other leading hitters included: Ray Mazara (.700), Rick Harder (.700), Nick Laduca (.700), Terry McIlrath (.600), and Kerry Charlet (.600).
Melbourne Beach Orioles three-peat in Senior Softball League
The Brevard Super Senior Softball League has a three-peat Champion. The Melbourne Beach Orioles won the Summer League with a 14-6 record. The Orioles’ previous championships were in the Winter League of 2025 and the summer session of 2024.
The session began in June and was supposed to end in August. However, with no less than 10 rainouts, the summer session came to an end Oct. 13.
The Orioles were led by Rob Milnor, who hit .880 for the season, followed by Edgar Dommar, who hit .800. Both Rob and Edgar led the team with six home runs apiece. Other notables are Nick Saiz, who hit .740, and Richard Garrity Victor Cordero, Orlando Santiago, Steve Colontonio and Pat Girard, who all hit in the .600’s.
The Brevard Super Senior Softball League plays on Monday nights in the City of Palm Bay. Individuals who are 55 and over and wish to play can sign up at superseniorsoftball.com. There are open batting practices every Saturday morning at 8 a.m. at Fred Poppe Regional Park off Malabar Road in Palm Bay.
