Should Jaguars move on from veteran defender in favor of cap savings?

There have been a lot of outside questions raised about Arik Armstead’s immediate future with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Doing so post-June 1st would save the Jaguars $14.48 million in 2026 salary cap space — a hefty amount. Those cap savings would be the primary reason behind this type of move.

That said, do the Jaguars have the luxury of doing that? I don’t believe they do.

Even with Armstead on the roster, defensive tackle is a question mark. That uncertainty only grows without him.

Armstead also provides what the Jaguars need most at the tackle position currently, an interior pass rush presence. Over an eight-game stretch from Weeks 4 through 12 last season, Armstead recorded at least four quarterback pressures five times.

That said, his production dipped down the stretch, and it is fair to wonder if his overall production level with the Jaguars aligns with the $19.38 million cap hit for the 2026 season. In short, it probably doesn’t, but again, what’s the alternative at defensive tackle?

All those cap savings would be great, but they don’t help the Jaguars on the football field in 2026 unless they go towards a player, and at this stage of the offseason, there aren’t any expected game-changers still lingering in free agency.

Also, teams can move on from a player at any point and designate them a post-June 1st release to maximize current cap savings — it doesn’t have to be only after that date. So one would think if this move were on the Jaguars’ radar, it would have happened already.

So while I get why Armstead’s name comes up in these conversations, I anticipate that he will be on the team this season.
