A Sarasota man is accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend and 6-year-old son at his mother’s home Saturday morning, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded around 11:45 a.m. May 23 to a home at 4707 Mondrian Court in the Artistry neighborhood after a 911 call reporting a shooting.
What happened in the Sarasota shooting that left a woman and child dead?
According to a probable cause affidavit, the suspect’s mother, Donna Novickis, told investigators that Nicholas, Allie and Phoenix Novickis arrived at her home to visit and swim. She said she returned to sleep before being awakened by breaking glass.
She then went to the back lanai, where she saw Phoenix near a doorway. Nicholas Novickis allegedly came outside holding a shotgun and shot the child in the head. While she was on the phone with 911, he also shot the dog, the affidavit states.

Authorities said there were no signs of an argument or disturbance before the shooting.

He is being held in the Sarasota County Jail without bond.
According to the affidavit, the suspect later expressed regret during a recorded interview.
The shooting occurred at a home owned by Robert and Donna Novickis, who purchased the property in 2024. The Artistry community is located east of Interstate 75 near Palmer Boulevard and Lorraine Road.
