Second inmate dies in Leon County jail's hospice program

A 58-year-old inmate, who had been in the Sheriff’s Office hospice care program, died May 6 at the Leon County Detention Facility.

Leon County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Javonni Hampton announced the death later that day.

The inmate, identified as Christopher Asjes, had been in what’s called the “Inmate Comfort Care Program,” Hampton said in a news release.

Asjes was pronounced dead around 3:48 p.m. by Big Bend Hospice staff and a YesCare nurse. His next of kin has been notified.

Asjes, who had been in custody since January, was being held on a charge of violating his sex offender probation, court records show.

“As with all in-custody deaths, standard protocols are being followed,” Hampton said. “The Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death.”

Asjes is now the second Leon County jail inmate to die in hospice care, according to reports.

In September 2025, 72-year-old Richard Schwartz died; he was the first inmate in the Inmate Comfort Care Program, designed to “provide compassionate end-of-life care for terminally ill patients in custody.”
