SEBASTIAN — Kelly Dixon resigned from office May 28, creating a vacancy on the City Council.
Dixon, 42, has served on the City Council since 2022, and was reelected to a second term in November.
“Due to a myriad of personal reasons, I have decided to step down effective immediately,” Dixon told colleagues during the meeting. “I will be forever thankful for the trust, enthusiastic acceptance and opportunity to serve this town.”
Officials praised Dixon as an advocate for families and children.
“She is a leader and voice for young families, who often can’t show up to meetings because of parental duties,” said Mayor Bob McPartlan. “She selflessly gave up her own family time, and I want to thank her for her selfless sacrifice.”
Filling the seat
With a City Council election set for November, the city charter provides two options to fill the vacancy.
The council can wait to have voters elect a replacement in November and have that new councilmember serve the unexpired year of Dixon’s term, or it can appoint a replacement.
The council is to decide June 9 how it will fill the vacancy, according to McPartlan.
Dixon teaches TV production, film and photography at Indian River Charter High School.
“It’s a discussion we need to have as a group and hear public input on,” said McPartlan. “We wish Kelly the best and hope this transition will go smoothly. She will be missed.”
