Scrapyard fire in DeLand put out, remains under investigation

A recycling scrapyard fire that sent a black column of smoke over DeLand’s south end and forced residents indoors has been put out, but its cause remains under investigation, officials said.

“There were no injuries reported,” said DeLand spokeswoman Sarah Lux on May 7.

On the afternoon of May 6, DeLand fire officials warned residents near the Central Florida Recycling yard on Garfield Avenue to stay indoors to protect themselves from the fire’s fumes.

Lux said firefighters from DeLand and Volusia County Fire Services battled the blaze to bring it under control.

When the fire initially broke out May 6, DeLand Fire Department posted a warning on Facebook around 4:47 p.m. warning residents near the recycling yard to stay indoors and keep their windows shut.

Fire officials said fumes from the fire had the potential to cause skin and lung irritation.

Volusia County Councilman Don Dempsey on his Facebook page also joined city officials to alert residents and gave a description of what was on fire at the recycling center.

“The fire is burning at or near a recycling/scrap facility located around 906 S. Garfield Avenue, close to the intersection of Garfield Avenue and Samuel Street in DeLand,” Dempsey wrote on his Facebook page.

He added that the scrapyard fire “produced a massive column of thick black smoke, visible for many miles across our area.”

Dempsey said scrap materials such as metal, rubber, and junked vehicles were burning.
