(This story has been updated to give a full transcript of what Scottie Scheffler said to caddie Ted Scott.)
By the lofty standards of Scottie Scheffler, it’s been a rough year. After winning his season debut at The American Express, he’s performed well with six top-five finishes — including a runner-up run of three straight events — but has yet to pick up win No. 2.
He’s suffered from slow starts throughout the season, though he’s managed to pick up enough steam to avoid missing any cuts. The world No. 1 finds himself in that position again heading into the second round of the Memorial Tournament after a 1-over 73 that featured an uncharacteristic blow-up at his caddie.
The frustration came to a head when Scheffler, seeking his third straight title at Muirfield Village, aimed his tee shot on the par-3 16th at the flagstick but came up well short and into the water. To that point, the four-time major champion had scuffled through the back nine with bogeys on Nos. 10 and 14. In between, he missed two makable birdie putts and hit into the bunker on the par-3 12th.

That led him to the 16th and Scheffler’s water shot. After his shot sailed left into the drink, Scottie had a tense exchange with caddie Ted Scott that was captured on camera by PGA Tour Live on the ESPN+ feed.
What Scottie Scheffler said to caddie Ted Scott
“I never thought it was in the water,” Scheffler said. “I don’t know what to do.” His frustrations mounted when Scott offered some inaudible advice. “I can’t hear a word you’re saying, dude,” Scheffler replied as he started the walk toward the drop zone.
“I feel like that was a good shot,” Scheffler said. “It was a good shot,” Scott replied. “Now I’m in the water because it (the wind) came in out of the right,” Scheffler responded.
“Absolutely flushed a 7-iron and we get the wind wrong and I’m in the water,” Scheffler went on to say. “I don’t think you understand how frustrating that is. Like that was a good shot, really was, flushed it, liked the line. The wind’s turning out of the right. Golly.”
“I don’t understand what I’m meant to do,” Scheffler said as he caught up with Scott at the drop zone. “I don’t understand. I really don’t. I mean, it was 5 yards short of the green, flushed … because it’s in too off the right. Like, there’s no way it could curve that much if the wind is helping us. It’s so frustrating. … I hit good shots, and drop it from hazards. Cannot get the wind right.”
Scheffler did rebound with a birdie on the 17th to finish the day at 1 over.
According to Yahoo Sports, Scheffler told reporters after his round it was “just another really good iron shot, and the wind switched from down off the right to pretty significantly in off the right. … It can be very frustrating sometimes when you feel like you’re hitting good shots and then you’re going to the drop zone.”
Will Scottie Scheffler miss the cut at the Memorial?
Scheffler started his second round about 10:25 a.m. ET June 5 with pars on his first five holes. At 1 over, he is two strokes over the current cut line and well over the 4-over cut line projected by DataGolf for the end of the day. Keep up with the latest updates on our live cut tracker.
