Jaquez Burrows, 18, of Sarasota, has been arrested and is facing a felony charge of burglary of an unoccupied vehicle and misdemeanor charges of loitering and prowling and resisting an officer without violence, according to the Sarasota Police Department.
Officers responded to South Osprey Avenue around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, after receiving a report of a suspicious person who may have been in possession of a firearm.
A resident told officers he heard noises outside his home, and when he opened the front door, he saw Burrows standing next to his brother’s vehicle with the driver’s side door open, according to a police department press release.
The resident said he saw what appeared to be a holster in Burrows’ waistband. After Burrows left the area, the resident called 911. Officers were then informed through dispatch that the suspect was wearing black clothing, a ski mask and was riding a black scooter.
Officers later saw a person matching the description traveling south on Alta Vista Street and South Orange Avenue. Officers set up a perimeter and requested assistance from a Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office helicopter.
Burrows eluded officers for several minutes but was tracked by the helicopter, according to police. An arrest took place near Pomelo Avenue and Alta Vista Street.
During a search, officers found two 13-round Glock handgun magazines in Burrows’ pocket but no firearm. The magazines did not have any ammunition. Officers also recovered a large amount of cash from Burrows’ pocket.
Burrows was arrested and taken to the Sarasota County Jail, police said.
Around 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, officers followed up in the area and found a firearm in a holster behind a home near where Burrows was arrested.
The firearm was identified a Glock Model 23 Gen 4 (.40 Cal). Also found were 13 rounds of .40-caliber ammunition in the magazine that was in the firearm. The firearm was collected as evidence and submitted for DNA analysis.
Burrows bonded out of jail on Monday, June 1 and is scheduled to be back in court for arraignment on June 26, 2026.
