Sales-tax free in Florida right now: Qualifying school supplies and this

Classes start up again soon across many of Florida’s counties, and Atlantic hurricane season won’t be over until November — supplies for both are currently free of sales taxes in the state.

From back-to-school supplies to those required for storm preparation, here’s a list of items that are currently exempt from sales taxes in Florida.

No sales tax on disaster preparedness items in Florida, year-round

According to Miami-Dade County’s website, sales tax has been permanently eliminated on disaster preparedness items.

When is hurricane season in Florida?

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30.

Ninety-seven percent of tropical cyclone activity occurs during this time period, according to NOAA. That said, “there is nothing magical about these dates,” and hurricanes “can and do occur” beyond their bounds.

Florida’s 2026 back-to-school sales tax holiday for school supplies began Monday, July 20, and will run through Thursday, Aug. 20.

Which back-to-school items qualify?

According to the Florida Department of Revenue, the full list of qualifying items includes the following, “if they meet the specified price limits and other conditions”:

When does school start in Florida?

The earliest start date for Florida schools is Aug. 10, which, in 2026, is a Monday.

Thirty-nine of Florida’s 67 counties will start the 2026-2027 school year on that day, which is the earliest possible start date. The latest start date in Florida is Thursday, Aug. 13.
