From the news release, hospital officials said MTC is the first educational institution in north central Florida to provide the diploma.

Both hospitals provide what’s described as “hands-on clinical experience,” as well as “students will complete rotations at nearby long-term care facilities, rehabilitation centers and ambulatory care sites,” according to the press release.

Sonna Harding, chief nursing officer at HCA Florida Ocala Hospital, said “This initiative reflects our commitment to strengthening the healthcare workforce, addressing the growing need for registered nurses, and expanding access to high-quality care throughout our communities.”

A MTC student who hospital officials said has a certified nursing assistant and licensed practical nurse credentials, is happy about the program.

“There are not that many opportunities for an LPN, and I knew that I wanted to work in a hospital. I would choose Marion Technical College again and again because of the affordability, it’s very manageable with your work and home life, and the instructors genuinely want you to succeed,” Miinda said.

About the program

The release notes explains the Professional Nursing Diploma Program. It mentions the program can be done in approximately a year, for roughly half the cost of a traditional four-year degree by many registered nurses.

Hospital officials said “The curriculum focuses on developing clinical judgment, patient-centered care, communication, leadership skills, and preparation for the Next Generation NCLEX-RN licensing examination.” It adds “The exam evaluates whether nursing graduates can safely apply critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills before entering professional practice.”

Citing information from the Florida Department of Heath, hospital officials said the county “is home to nearly 1,600 licensed practical nurses,” according to the Florida Department of Health.

“This model represents an innovative workforce-focused option intended to help address Florida’s ongoing nursing shortages while creating greater career mobility opportunities for working nurses,” said MTC Health Sciences Coordinator Jennifer Stockton.

Stockton is appreciative for the “the support and collaboration of HCA Florida Ocala Hospital and HCA Florida West Marion Hospital as clinical partners in this effort,” the release states, indicating “These partnerships are essential in helping students transition from practical nursing into professional nursing practice through real-world clinical learning experiences.”

For Harding, the program helps “nurses continue their education and build on their skills, we are creating meaningful pathways for professional growth while ensuring our patients benefit from a highly trained and compassionate nursing workforce.”
