PORT ORANGE — A man shot two employees at a Walgreens on Taylor Road Wednesday and then turned the gun on himself, according to Port Orange police.
The two employees were transported to area hospitals after the shootings. Police did not release the status of their conditions. Police public information officer Mike Wallace said at a 7:30 p.m. press conference that police were still trying to notify their families.
Multiple agencies responded to an active shooter call at 5:26 p.m. and arrived at the Walgreens almost immediately, Wallace said. Officers found the dead man in the parking lot.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families,” Wallace said.
Police originally said there were no other customers in the store at the time of the shooting, however, further investigation shows there was one customer inside the store, according to a press release. That customer was not harmed. Wallace wasn’t sure how many other employees were in the store, but said if it was busier, the situation could have been much worse.
Wallace was asked whether the employees were a pharmacist and a pharmacy tech, but he said he didn’t know their positions.
Earlier Wednesday evening, the drugstore’s parking lot was completely taped off, and what appeared to be store employees were standing at the front door. Bystanders were on the street looking at the scene.
“This is something that doesn’t typically occur in our city,” Wallace said.
The department will continue to give updates as they become available.
