Two brothers were killed in Pierson on Wednesday night when a train hit their vehicle as they tried to drive around the lowered barriers at a railroad crossing, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office said.
They were identified as Oscar Cardenas, 32, the driver, and passenger Jehu Cardenas, 20, residents of Pierson, the sheriff’s office said.
The crash occurred at 9:14 p.m. at West Washington and North Volusia (County Road 3) avenues, investigating deputies said. The brothers were pronounced dead at the scene.
The brothers were traveling east on West Washington Avenue from County Road 3 and tried to drive around the lowered barriers with flashing warning lights, deputies said.
As the vehicle attempted to cross, a train heading north hit the vehicle, deputies said.
