Embattled Pace Pharmacy facing lawsuit over death of customer

Pace Pharmacy and its owners are facing a lawsuit after a former client died within days of filling his prescription.

Levin Papantonio filed a lawsuit on behalf of Andrew Strickland’s family after the 47-year-old was found unresponsive in his bedroom in June 2023, just 10 days after filling his prescription for morphine and diazepam.

“As fathers around the Pensacola community were celebrating Father’s Day, this family was mourning the loss of theirs because of pharmacies like Pace Pharmacy,” attorney Peter Mougey told the News Journal. “They don’t follow the mandated guidelines from the federal government to monitor and check for red flags associated with opiate prescriptions.”

Unpopular Pensacola Beach Gateway sign axed after community ridicule, funding loss

Escambia County Commissioner Ashley Hofberger has ended her quest to erect a Pensacola Beach Gateway sign to welcome visitors to the beach and hide toll equipment after intense public backlash and a lack of funding.

Hofberger on Thursday − ahead of a specially called commissioners meeting − provided an update to the media “in the spirit of transparency and community accountability” on the project’s revised path forward.

At the meeting itself Hofberger read the news release she had made public the day before and afterward said the county is focused at this time on “functionality” of the Pensacola Beach tolling system.

“We want to make sure this is up and operational,” she said. “We can revisit any secondary priorities later on.”

Are they ready yet? 5 highly-anticipated Pensacola-area restaurants slated to open in 2025

While there always seem to be new restaurants popping up in Escambia and Santa Rosa County, there are a handful that have been in the works for a while that Pensacola can hardly wait for. Here are five of the most highly anticipated restaurant openings to keep on your radar, still set to open in 2025.

Yes, eating out is getting more expensive. It’s not greed, it’s survival, restaurateurs say

One question has been on everyone’s mind when pulling into a drive-through or perusing a menu. Has it always been this expensive?

Diners aren’t imagining the changes within their favorite restaurants. Studies and surveys indicate more Americans are eating at home to combat rising prices and inflation, and more restaurants feeling the pinch as they deal with rising prices and decreasing business. Here’s how local restaurants and stores are dealing with the fallout.

‘Teddy bear’ Nick Wing will go down as karaoke ‘legend’ in Pensacola

Who didn’t know Nick Wing?

That’s the majority sentiment many of his friends and those who knew him say about the “jolly” karaoke singer who was well-known among Pensacola nightlife circles.

Wing died June 17 in a car crash. Friends say he was driving down Scenic Highway when the crash occurred. Pensacola police responded to a crash on Scenic Highway near Manolet Street June 17, but the PPD has a standing policy to only name crash victims to family members.

His death was a blow to the Pensacola community.
