Palm Bay Fire Rescue, FWC report drowning of adult in Turkey Creek area

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) is investigating the drowning of a man in his 60s who was kayaking in the Turkey Creek area on Thursday afternoon, Jan. 22.

Palm Bay Fire Rescue, along with police, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and the BCSO helicopter, responded to one of the narrow, winding waterways in Turkey Creek, a popular 130-acre area not far from the Port Malabar library.

First responders in airboats, along with FWC, located the unidentified person underwater in about 15 feet of water. The man was kayaking with either companions or family when his boat flipped over, Palm Bay Fire Rescue officials said.

It was not immediately known if the man was wearing a life vest or if it became separated from him, officials said.

An investigation is underway.
