North Florida faces severe storm risk, what to expect

Residents across North Florida should prepare for another round of potentially severe thunderstorms through May 10, with forecasters warning of damaging winds and large hail.

The National Weather Service in Tallahassee has issued a “Marginal Risk,” the lowest level on the five-tier severe weather scale, for the region each day through the weekend.

The upshot: While the threat is lower than May 7’s conditions, meteorologists caution that isolated severe storms remain possible.

Friday afternoon threat?

Severe weather is expected to develop the afternoon of May 8 and early evening across all Florida counties in the region.

The primary concerns include isolated damaging wind gusts and isolated large hail, NWS said.

According to forecasters, the atmospheric setup is less favorable for tornado development compared to earlier this week.

Weekend outlook

The severe weather threat continues over the weekend, mainly during daylight hours from late morning through early evening. The Marginal Risk area encompasses the entire Big Bend both days, with nearly identical coverage expected.

In addition to wind and hail threats, intense downpours could trigger isolated flash flooding. Forecasters have designated a Marginal Risk for excessive rainfall on May 9, west of a line stretching from Panama City to Albany, Georgia. It’s the lowest level on the four-tier excessive rainfall scale.

Regardless, residents should monitor weather conditions closely and have multiple ways to receive warnings, NWS said.
