Nancy Cox of Ponte Vedra Beach reserves a spot in U.S. Women's Amateur match play

Nancy Cox of Ponte Vedra Beach put four birdies together during a seven-hole stretch and with a 71 on Aug. 5, ensured a spot in the U.S. Women’s Amateur match play at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn.

Cox, a Ponte Vedra High graduate and an incoming junior at Oklahoma, shot 75 in the first round. She began the second round at No. 10 and went on a tear, making birdie at Nos. 13, 14, 17 and 1 to get to 4-under for the day and a spot in the top-10 at one point.

Cox bogeyed Nos. 3, 7 and 8 but her 2-over 146 for two rounds put her in a tie for 36th at the time she finished, which is well within the bubble for the match-play cut to the low 64 players.

As of mid-afternoon, 71 players were 4-over or better.

Missing the match-play cut will be University of North Florida senior Kaitlyn Schroeder of Jacksonville, who matched the 75 Cox shot in the first round. But Schroeder triple-bogeyed the par-4 12 hole, bogeyed No. 13 and finished with a 77 to shoot 8-over 152. When she was done, she was in a tie for 106th.

Aphrodite Deng, a Canadian native who lives part-time in Jacksonville, shot a second 71 and will make match play at 2-under 142. Deng was in a tie for sixth when she was done, two shots behind clubhouse medalist Anna Davis (69).

Match play will begin on Aug. 5.
