Merritt Island beach volleyball played for the Class 2A state championship on Saturday, May 9, at Florida State University in Tallahassee.
After a 4-1 state semifinal win over Charlotte, the 3-seeded Mustangs faced No. 1 seed Chiles.
Chiles clinched the state title with a 3-0 victory, sweeping the first three completed matches of the dual. Due to the threat of inclement weather, play ended once the dual was decided.
In session one, Merritt Island’s No. 2 pair of senior Delaney Petit and junior Reece Loggins lost 2-0 to Chiles junior Loganne Abernathy and sophomore Riley Warmath.
Timberwolves junior Riley Boykin and sophomore Callie Rowse prevailed 2-0 over Merritt Island junior Khloe Horton and sophomore Lydia Scott in the No. 4 pair.
Chiles secured the dual win in the No. 1 pair with senior Natalie Gibson and junior Meg Hearn sweeping Mustang juniors Bella Becker and Amber Ives.
Merritt Island junior Whitney Wisniewski and sophomore Peyton Riordan comprised the No. 3 pair. The No. 5 pair for the Mustangs was junior Sadie McClellan and sophomore Gena Walters.
Merritt Island ends the season as the Class 2A state runner-up. The Mustangs won their first match ever in Tallahassee at the FHSAA state tournament on Friday, finishing the year with an FHSAA school record of 18 wins.
