Men's March Madness: Expert predictions for Florida vs Houston NCAA in Tournament Finals

The Florida Gators have a chance to earn their third-ever men’s college basketball national championship banner on Monday night against the Houston Cougars. The two top-seeded teams are set to clash in San Antonio at the Alamodome as March Madness roars toward an epic finish.

It is truly an instance of an unstoppable force meeting an unmoveable object as the Gators bring in one of the most prolific offenses in the game, while the Cougars owned the stingiest defense in the nation during the regular season. Both teams have bruising frontcourt that will likely decide the outcome, but perimeter shooting will also play in heavily on Monday night.

In a game with razor-thin odds that includes two programs that are riding double-digit win streaks — including conference title victories — it is a tough call predicting who will prevail. The Gators Wire staff took a stab at projecting the outcome with our respective takes shown below.

‘Florida can play ugly if needed’

“If you’re expecting a Houston cakewalk, think again. The Gators aren’t here for the scenery—they’re here to finish the job. Houston’s defense is the real deal, but they’re going up against an offense with incredible balance, tempo and shot-making under pressure. Florida’s backcourt, led by Walter Clayton Jr., is poised, experienced and knows how to break traps without blinking. The frontcourt is physical, mobile and not afraid to scrap for every board.

“Todd Golden has been outcoaching big names all tournament long, and he’s got this group locked in. Houston wants to grind you down. That’s fine. Florida can play ugly if needed.

“This team’s been building toward this moment all season—and now that they’re here, they’re not letting up. When the dust settles, don’t be shocked if the Gators are the ones cutting down the nets. They’re tougher than you think, smarter than they get credit for and peaking at the perfect time.” — Aidan Gallardo

Prediction: Florida 75, Houston 70

‘This team is special and they know it’

“There’s a bad, bad man in Orange and Blue and his name is Walter Clayton Jr. I don’t care if Houston is a metrically elite program, they aren’t Duke, and Clayton is playing like the best guard in the country. Will Richard impacts the game without chucking up shots and Thomas Haugh is now the most consistent big in the roster. Alijah Martin seems to come up big every game too.

“If Alex Condon figures out the scoring part of the game again, and he might with no Johni Broome on the other side of the court, it’s wraps.

“This team is special and they know it. Gators lead for most of the game and claim a third national championship. Clayton and Todd Golden go down as the greatest coach-player tandem in program history.” — David Rosenberg

Prediction: Florida 80, Houston 72

‘So, who will win? The Orange and Blue’

“The Gators continue to look like a team of destiny, but make no mistake, the Cougars have some serious mojo going on as well. Both teams clawed back from deficits in the Final Four against the Auburn Tigers and Duke Blue Devils — either of which could have easily been slated for Monday night’s battle. Suffice it to say, the Florida-Houston ticket is about as evenly matched as it gets.

“However, the two schools operate very differently as Houston prefers to play a slow, methodical game relying on the nation’s strongest defense, while Florida prefers a fast pace, breaking out in transition after their frontcourt wrecking crew grabs the rebound — something the Gators are among the best in the country at doing.

“So, who will win? The Orange and Blue. But it will be a bruiser of a game that has us on the edge of our seats the entire way.” — Adam Dubbin

Prediction: Florida 75, Houston 72
