Liam Coen provides update on Jaguars' WR/CB Travis Hunter during OTAs

As Travis Hunter continues to rehab from last season’s knee injury, he was not participating in the on-field portion of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ OTA practice on Tuesday.

However, he remains actively involved, and one way that the Jaguars are accomplishing that is through their virtual room.

“The virtual room has been really good for Travis to be able to go in there,” Liam Coen said of Hunter. “We expanded that room downstairs to make it one big room, and man, you can go in there and essentially play a game like almost from the defensive back’s perspective. All you see is the linebackers, the D-line and the offense, and so he can go in there in a half hour and play a game and just go. Right now, you’re not going to be able to get a ton of all the routes and how they play out, but alignment, assignment, making calls, adjustments to formations has been so valuable to him.”

Coen added that Hunter goes into the virtual room two to three times a day for roughly 25 to 30 minutes each time.

“That’s accumulating a ton of reps that he’s not going to be able to get until he’s cleared to go,” Coen said. “So, we’re really at the mercy of the rehab and the docks in terms of what that looks like in the next steps of getting out on the grass. But really feel no pressure. I think he’s done a phenomenal job.”

Then, as practice unfolds, Hunter has a mic so he can hear the play calls and mentally put himself in the situation. So although he’s not able to go through the on-field reps, he’s going through the practice script multiple times between the meeting rooms, the virtual room, and then being in on the play calls during practice.

“To get out here and be able to hear the call, go line up, say what he’s got, kind of walk a few steps through,” Coen said. “I’ve been very pleased with Travis and the way like he looks, his upper body. I mean, he runs outside of my office in the mornings and I mean, he looks like he’s been in the weight room. So, I’ve been very pleased.”

Back in April, GM James Gladstone said that the plan for Hunter was for him to be at “full tick” come training camp.
