Liam Coen details 'pivotal' offseason for Caleb Ransaw

The Jacksonville Jaguars are in the middle of OTAs, with the first practice having concluded on Tuesday. Afterward, head coach Liam Coen gave updates on injured players, what he is hoping to see from some of his star veterans, and what he’s looking forward to as OTAs unfold.

One player Coen has previously said he is excited to see this season is Caleb Ransaw, a safety whose rookie season was cut short in 2025 after suffering a foot injury during training camp that required surgery.

So while Ransaw is technically a sophomore, 2026 is, for all intents and purposes, his true rookie year. And in his post-OTA interview, Coen said this offseason will have huge implications.

“To not obviously have a lot of the experience that he was able to get last year, having a quote-unquote red shirt, if you will,” he said of Ransaw’s rookie season. “So he was in his playbook, he was watching tape and doing all those things, but it’s so hard to take a step and really feel comfortable without doing it. This time is huge for Caleb to actually go through those motions, to make those calls, to see the defense work from his vantage point and how things, you know, work together. So I think it’s huge for Caleb.”

There won’t be much pressure on Ransaw to become an overnight superstar; safety is a fairly solid position for Jacksonville. Eric Murray and Antonio Johnson will be the starters, with Rayuan Lane and Jalen Huskey providing depth, along with Ransaw.

But Coen has also been open about how excited he is to see how Ransaw will contribute to the defense. If Ransaw does earn playing time, it would likely be as third safety, which under Anthony Campanile’s scheme, would still mean steady playing time.

“It’s a nice thing where you’ve got Antonio Johnson who ascended towards the end of season, Eric Murray coming back, Rayuan Lane another year and then you’re like, well, shoot, Caleb,” Coen said earlier this year. “Who knows what that could look like? We’re just excited to see what it could be.”
