Some town residents are worried about the future of a vacant lot that fronts Peruvian Avenue and is just behind the property at 151 Worth Ave., where the former Neiman Marcus department store stood. They fear that the property, which a developer has said will become a garden, could be used for gatherings after a construction project is finished.

Letter: Peruvian Avenue lot should be a quiet space after construction

While it’s good to see something constructive being done with the former Neiman Marcus — which has been empty for three years — I was quoted in Sunday’s paper as being “furious” over the plan for the lot, which is not exactly true.

I fully understand that demolition could not be done from the Worth Avenue side; therefore, using the green space on the Peruvian Avenue side made the most sense. However, a heads-up would have been nice. Not one neighbor on this strictly residential block of Peruvian Avenue was informed of the impending construction, which has had a significant impact on the neighborhood and understandably got residents up in arms.

Dealing with construction in Palm Beach has become the norm rather than the exception. I truly believe that once this project is finished, it will be an asset to the town. As for the green space currently being used for construction staging, I have been assured by the developer that when all is said and done, it will become a beautiful garden. Nievera Williams is one of the finest landscape firms in the country, so I have every reason to believe that will be the case.

What concerns me is how this garden might ultimately be used. Will it simply be something viewed from the windows on the north side of the building, or will there be French doors allowing patrons to spill out into it? Will there be a terrace? Walkways?

Any use of this space beyond visual enjoyment will have a direct impact on the privacy and tranquility of the neighbors on both sides of the garden. Any events — charitable or otherwise — should be held within the confines of the building or on the outdoor patio of the second-floor restaurant.
