Juneteenth and other fun this weekend in the Jacksonville area

This is Juneteenth weekend, and several big celebrations are planned in Jacksonville.

Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when Union soldiers informed former slaves in Texas that they were free and is now a federal holiday, celebrated this year on Friday, June 19.

In Jacksonville, festivities will be held this weekend in several places:

Primus

With Les Claypool’s Frog Brigade and Claypool Lennon Delirium, 7 p.m. Friday, June 19, at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre. $63-$97.

If you are even sort of into Les Claypool’s peculiar brand of bass playing, this is the show for you. Claypool will play with Primus, his best-known band, but also with two of his side projects. At earlier stops on this tour, he’s had all three bands onstage at the same time. Info: theamp.com

Struggle Jennings

8 p.m. Friday, June 19, at Jack Rabbits. $37.

Waylon Jennings was an outlaw country music legend. Struggle Jennings is a whole different story. Struggle (born William Harness) grew up close to his grandmother, whose second husband was Waylon, and he adopted the surname when he launched his music career. You can certainly hear strains of country in Struggle’s hip-hop. Info: jaxlive.com

Amelia Island International Skate & Surf Film Festival

1 p.m. Saturday, June 20, at the Tigre Island Music Room, Fernandina Beach. $40-$95.

Eighteen films about surfing and/or skating, some of which run less than two minutes, will be shown and live music will be played all day. At 8 p.m., they’ll screen “El Toro,” with Supreme performing a live score. Info: skatesurffilm.org

Rick Ross

7 p.m. Saturday, June 20, at the Moran Theater. $97-$312.

Ross redefined hip-hop with his 2006 “Port of Miami” album, and he’s celebrating its 20th anniversary with a 17-city tour that’s stopping by Jacksonville. He’ll be accompanied onstage by the Renaissance Orchestra and the Sainted Trap Choir. It’s such a special occasion that Ross is asking fans to dress in formal black-tie attire. Info: jaxevents.com
