John Carroll softball's regional hopes on hold after rain

FORT PIERCE – The John Carroll Catholic High softball team will have to wait another day to see if it advances in the regional tournament.

Tuesday afternoon’s game between the Rams and visiting Cardinal Newman was postponed because of rain at Pam Drawdy Field.

John Carroll led 2-0 when the game was stopped in the top of the second inning of the Class 2A-Region 4 semifinal.

The game tentatively is scheduled to resume 11 a.m. Wednesday.

After holding the Crusaders scoreless in the top of the first inning, the fifth-seeded Rams (13-8) jumped on top with a couple of runs in the bottom of the frame.

With one out, Samantha Rychter singled to right. Makayla Ortiz reached on a fielder’s choice error. Isabella Sanchez also got on via a fielder’s choice bunt to load the bases.

Cristina LeSchander hit a sacrifice fly to center. Victoria O’Brien followed with a run-scoring single past first base to make it 2-0.

Ortiz got out of an early jam in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Reese Khanna reached second base on an error and was sacrificed to third. Ortiz then struck out the next two hitters.

The game was stopped with Maggie Horner at first after a walk and no outs in the top of the second. Izzy Luna had a 1-0 count when the lightning meter went off. The rain came shortly thereafter making the field unplayable.

Eighth-seeded Cardinal Newman (13-7) knocked off top-seed Miami Florida Christian, 13-3, in the regional quarterfinals.

The Rams blanked fourth-seeded Miami Palmer Christian, 7-0, in the opening round.

The winner of the John Carroll-Cardinal Newman game will be on the road in the regional final Thursday against either No. 2 Oxbridge Academy or No. 3 King’s Academy.
