Jaguars GM James Gladstone weighs in on Tyson Campbell – Greg Newsome trade

The Jacksonville Jaguars have made the Tyson Campbell – Greg Newsome trade official. And with that, GM James Gladstone discussed the move.

“We are trying to win football games now and Greg helps us do that, as his skillset is a strong fit for our defensive scheme, which puts more vision on the quarterback and will lean on Greg’s ability to find the football,” said James Gladstone in a statement. “We will continue to be aggressive, to make us the best possible team this season.”

As NFL insider Albert Breer laid out, Newsome is a better fit for Anthony Campanile’s vision-based and zone-heavy defensive scheme.

There was a likely financial motive to this for the Jaguars as well, with them now getting out of the four-year, $76.5 million extension that Campbell signed in 2024.

Newsome is playing out this season on his fifth-year option and will be a free agent in 2026. The Jaguars are taking on a larger cap hit this year, but will have more flexibility moving forward.

With Jourdan Lewis at the nickel, Newsome will presumably play outside, but he has the versatility to play both positions.

Newsome has had stretches of some really good ball production in his career. This includes forcing 14 pass deflections in 2023 and totaling 15 pass deflections between the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

This season, lining up mostly on the outside, Newsome has allowed 15 completions on 23 targets at 13.0 yards per catch with three pass deflections.
