Are public schools really teaching kids?
I am responding to the recent guest column by Sarasota County School Board Member Tom Edwards (“Florida’s school voucher program is the grift that keeps grifting,” May 17).
I drove a church van in Sarasota County for more than five years and I would pick up kids – ages 5 to 17 – for Sunday school.
Since I love history, I would always have questions for the kids.
Only a handful could name the first person to step foot on the moon (Neil Armstrong).
None of them could name the countries that made up the Axis powers during World War II (Germany, Italy and Japan).
Nor could these kids answer many other questions about American history.
So I guess my point is this:
If our public schools are as great as Edwards’ guest column suggests, shouldn’t our kids have a better knowledge of the history of our country?
Thank you,
John Predgen, Bradenton
