How FSU football Michai Danzy, Tallahassee native, was at the heart of win over Alabama

Micahi Danzy knew he had a chance to score his first Florida State football touchdown when he saw Duce Robinson blocking downfield.

In the second quarter of the No. 19 Seminoles’ 31-17 win over No. 20 Alabama, Danzy took a reverse 32 yards, breaking a few tackles on the way into the end zone to give FSU a 14-7 lead.

It was a special moment for the Tallahassee native, who said he celebrated by pointing to his family, and he credits that moment to the downfield blocking.

“First, I want to thank my blockers, wouldn’t happen without them. I saw Duce, and Coach Harris is big on what we do without the ball, saw Duce just running with the man down the field, so I want to appreciate the blockers first, but it meant a lot,” Danzy said of his first score.

“My mom, my family was on that side, so I pointed to them when I scored. It really meant a lot.”

Danzy’s credit for the downfield blocking speaks to a larger mindset from the Seminoles team. Head coach Mike Norvell credited his team’s buy-in to “winning football” after the Alabama win, and he pointed to moments like Robinson’s blocking or the push running back Gavin Sawchuk received from his teammates to score the game’s final touchdown.

There is a collective selflessness being displayed by the Seminoles. While Danzy had three carries for 56 yards and a score, one of his biggest moments came when he blocked an Alabama defender to allow running back Caziah Holmes to score a touchdown to make it 24-7 FSU in the third quarter.

“It’s like practice to me. We practiced it a lot … I knew who I had and I said ‘My man will not touch whoever gets the ball,” Danzy said. “That was my mentality going into that.”

Danzy switched from running back to wide receiver in the offseason, and he credited his running back background for his ability to shed tackles.

The record-breaking All-American, ACC champion sprinter is a constant threat for a big play in offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn’s offense, as evident in his performance against Alabama. His touchdown and blocking helped the Seminoles stun the Crimson Tide and it led to an iconic moment at Doak Campbell Stadium.

As the fans stormed the field, Danzy found his family in the stands and his FSU track teammates, sharing a moment he couldn’t believe was playing out in front of his eyes.

“It was crazy, I looked and said, ‘Wow, this is really happening right now,” Danzy said.
