How did FSU football's QBs perform in final scrimmage of spring

Florida State football head coach Mike Norvell felt both quarterbacks Ashton Daniels and Kevin Sperry had some “really good plays” in the Seminoles final scrimmage of spring camp.

The battle between Daniels and Sperry has been the main storyline of spring for the program, and Norvell said that the pair managed the offense well in the scrimmage on Saturday, April 11. A week removed from a scrimmage that Norvell felt was won by the defense, he credited the offense for its response.

Norvell felt it was “probably the best offensive performance of the spring.” While both quarterbacks had moments they needed to be better in, Daniels and Sperry led a couple of scoring drives each.

“Both those guys had really good plays today, and showed good control. They managed the offense well, able to extend some plays, and then they made pretty good decisions for the most part,” Norvell said. “Both of them had individual plays where we’d like to have them back. But I think they’re understanding what we’re asking them to do… I liked what I saw from them and their control and command of the offense.”

FSU football QB situation in scrimmage

Both Daniels and Sperry have had “good and bad” moments throughout the spring, according to Norvell and other members of the coaching staff.

Daniels spent a season at Auburn after three years at Stanford. He threw for 797 yards and three touchdowns while adding 280 rushing yards and two touchdowns in his four appearances for Auburn last year. Sperry spent last season backing up Tommy Castellanos and racked up limited appearances. He threw for 194 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 27 yards on the ground in three games.

The final scrimmage was a positive for both signal callers, but neither has been named the starter with two practices to go. Norvell previously said the Seminoles would only name a starter once they were “confident” enough to do so.

Should the battle continue into the fall, Norvell said he isn’t worried about any potential impacts it could have on game planning.

“You got a pretty good sense of what these guys are. That’s really part of the spring, is you go through spring and you kind of get a sense of what guys are, what they see clearly, where are some things they got to continue to work on. There are a lot of similar traits in the skill sets of what these guys can do,” Norvell said.

“I don’t care, first team, second team, third team, whatever it is, you are always going to have a plan for what guys have shown that they are most confident in, what they execute best… I feel confident that we’ve got the people in place, the schemes in place, to be very, very successful.”
