Debbie Hawley defended her St. Lucie County School Board District 1 seat against one challenger in the Aug. 18 primary election, according to unofficial results from the Supervisor of Elections Office.
Hawley, who was elected to a fifth term, fended off a challenge from political newcomer Brian Capp in the nonpartisan race.
“As a fourth-generation resident of St. Lucie County, I am proud of the success our school district has accomplished and I will continue to work diligently to continue that success,” Hawley said in her TCPalm candidate questionnaire.
Hawley emphasized experience on the board, support of career-ready pathways for St. Lucie County graduates and opposition to privatizing the school district’s custodial staff.
“I have been a part of this district when we were not doing well at all, and I am now a part of this district that is an A-rated destination district,” she said in the questionnaire. “I believe I made significant contributions to that success, and I am proud of our accomplishments.”
Voters across the county are eligible to cast ballots in School Board races, regardless of where they live, but candidates must live in the district they’re running to represent.
St. Lucie County School Board members are elected to four-year terms and are paid $51,531.
