Here's how Palm Beach County golfers fared in first round of the Junior PGA Championships

A trio of Palm Beach County golfers have put themselves among the leaders after the first round on July 29 at the 49th Boys & Girls Junior PGA Championships in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Boca Raton’s Catherine Andino shot 68 (4-under) and is tied for fifth while Jupiter’s Grace Carter shot 70 (2-under) and is tied for 15th. The local pair are chasing Indiana’s Taylor Snively, who leads at 7-under.

Andino, a rising junior at West Boca Raton High School, enters the tournament fresh off a win at Florida’s Junior Amateur Match Play Championship on July 24.

She continued her strong recent play with five birdies and a lone bogey in Tuesday’s first round.

“I got off to a little bit of a slow start, a few putts didn’t drop, but I stayed patient,” Andino told PGA of America media staff after the round. “I knew that there were still more opportunities out there.

“I played pretty smart and kind of just stayed patient and waited for those birdies to come. It’s awesome playing against some of the best players from all over the country”

In boys competition, Royal Palm Beach’s Giuseppe Puebla shot 68 (3-under) and is tied for 20th after the first round. He is four shots back of Pennsylvania’s Chase Yenser, who leads at 7-under.

The first round of the boys tournament was played on Purdue University’s Ackerman-Allen Course while the girls tournament was on the Kampen-Cosler Course. Players will swap courses for Wednesday’s second round.

The tournament will cut to the top 60 plus ties the second round. It will cut down to the top 30 plus ties after the third round on Thursday.
