Hearing to keep driver in fatal Dunlawton tollbooth crash jailed

Prosecutors June 9 will ask a judge to keep jailed without bond a woman accused of driving a pickup truck when it crashed into a tollboth, killing the attendant in Daytona Beach Shores.

Deanna Harrell, 35, of Ormond Beach, was arrested in the June 1 crash that killed Tammie Jo Baker, of Daytona Beach. She was charged with vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter, both second-degree felonies punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

Harrell is scheduled to appear before Circuit Judge Leah Case at 1:30 p.m. June 9 at the S. James Foxman Justice Center in Daytona Beach.

Harrell was driving a pickup truck about 12:38 p.m. June 1 when it crashed into the tollbooth and then continued into the surf where the truck then headed south before stopping in the sand and water, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office said.

Baker had just reported for work seconds before the crash; she died at the scene.

Driver in deadly tollbooth crash said she had ‘buzz’ when she left bar

Harrell, who was living at Tomoka State Park, left a bar shortly before the crash. She admitted to drinking two rum and Cokes and a half shot of alcohol at the bar, a court motion stated. She also said she had a “buzz” when she left the bar.

She also told investigators that she had been drinking Gatorade and vodka from a Gatorade bottle, the motion stated.

Before the crash, 911 callers reported a vehicle described as consistent or matching Harrell’s pickup as not staying in its laying and making “odd movements.” A caller said the vehicle struck a mailbox. Another caller said it hit a curb.
