FSU softball sweeps doubleheader vs. Marshall

The No. 7 FSU softball team swept its doubleheader with the Marshall Thundering Herd on Saturday at JoAnne Graf Field, improving to 4-0 on the season. They never trailed in either game, outscoring them 16-4.

Here is a look at how both games went for the Seminoles.

Game One: FSU 6, Marshall 2

The Seminoles opened the day with a 6-2 win, cruising to their third straight victory.

Jazzy Francik threw another excellent game, allowing no runs on three hits and one walk over five innings to earn the win. She struck out eight batters and allowed just one base runner to reach scoring position.

Isa Torres gave FSU a 1-0 lead all by herself in the bottom of the first inning, hitting a triple down the right field line before scoring on a wild pitch. She finished the game 2 for 4 with two runs scored.

FSU got some breathing room in the fourth inning when Makenna Sturgis hit a two-run homer to make it a 3-0 game. It was the first homer of the freshman’s career, and scored Anna Hinde, who had walked. Torres followed it with a single and came around to score on an error when Marin Heller singled after her, making it a 4-0 game.

Bella Ruggiero hit a two-out double in the fifth inning and got to third when Sturgis singled and promptly stole second. They both scored on an error by Marshall on what should have been an inning groundout by Torres.

Freshman Bella Dimitrijevic got her first action of the season to close out the game, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk in the final two innings. She allowed FSU’s first homer of the season in the seventh inning.

Game Two: FSU 10, Marshall 2

Freshman Marlee Gaskell got the start for the Seminoles in the circle, allowing one run in two innings of work on two hits, a walk, and a hit by pitch. She struckout three batters and was pulled after allowing a leadoff single in the third inning for Ashtyn Danley, who allowed the runner to score, but that was all.

Hayley Griggs gave the Seminoles a 1-0 lead in the second inning with her first career home run. Marin Heller made it 2-0 with a single, scoring Madi Frey. It was Griggs’ first career home run.

After allowing one run in the top of the inning, the Seminoles took control in the bottom of the third. Danley walk and Anna Hinde singled to put two on with nobody out, before a fielder’s choice and a single by Makenna Sturgis loaded the bases. Another fielder’s choice allowed two runs to score and let Frey reach safely. A single by Isa Torres made it a 6-1 game.

Marshall got their second run in the fifth inning when they hit a solo homer off Danley. She allowed just one run over 2 1/3 innings on three hits and two walks. She added three strikeouts and went 1 for 2 at the plate with a walk. Danley walked the next two batters before being replaced by Makenna Reid, who retired the next two batters to end the threat.

FSU responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning, getting their second run-rule in as many days. Griggs started it with a walk before three straight doubles scored three runs. Shelby McKenzie then walked it off with a single, her second walk-off in as many days.
