The FSU Seminoles are starting Bryson Moore on Friday against the St. John’s Red Storm on Friday in the first game of the Tallahassee Regional. Head coach Link Jarrett announced the news on Thursday, continuing a trend he has followed as FSU’s head coach.
Moore has started 13 games for the Seminoles this season, recording a 3.88 ERA in 62.2 innings pitched. Opponents are hitting .211 off him, with 59 strikeouts and 24 walks. FSU is 8-5 in his starts, and he has a 5-2 record.
While he has yet to throw more than 86 pitches in a start this season, he has given FSU plenty of length. His last two starts have been for 6.0 and 7.2 innings, respectively. The Virginia transfer has never pitched in the NCAA Tournament.
St. John’s is scoring 6.2 runs per game and hitting .279 as a team with a .789 OPS. They have 50 home runs, 95 doubles, and 10 triples. They have drawn 244 walks and struck out 392 times.
By starting Moore, FSU is saving staff ace and ACC Pitcher of the Year Wes Mendes for Saturday, be it an elimination game or for a chance to put them in the regional final. Jarrett has now saved his No. 1 starter all three years that the Seminoles have made the postseason, a decision that worked the first two time.
