CAPE CANAVERAL — Four people trapped on a burning boat off Cape Canaveral escaped injury June 28 after the U.S. Coast Guard and a Good Samaritan carried out a rescue.
The incident happened about 1:30 p.m., about a mile offshore of the Brevard County coastline, the U.S. Coast Guard reported.
All four passengers aboard the sailboat, who were not identified, were taken aboard a passing boat and then brought to shore by Brevard County Sheriff’s Office crews. It was not immediately known what started the fire or where the passengers were from, the Coast Guard said.
Black smoke from the burning ship billowed into the afternoon skies as a Coast Guard rescue boat from Port Canaveral and the sheriff’s office responded to the site. The incident is being reviewed by the U.S. Coast Guard.
