Four Arts children's library hosts final Palm Beach Public field trip

If there’s anything many students enjoy, it’s a field trip that takes them out of the classroom and allows them to experience a different kind of learning.

If there’s anything students can benefit from, it’s quite likely a visit to a great library. Sometimes putting the fundamental kills in a different setting can make a world of difference.

Both happened on Feb. 4, when all three first-grade classes from Palm Beach Public Elementary visited the Children’s Library at the Society of the Four Arts.

The “Illustrating Words” included poetry reading by author Robert L. Forbes, a scavenger hunt in the Mary Alice Fortin Children’s Art Gallery, and an arts & crafts activity.  Classes rotated through the three activities.  Students then then enjoyed their packed lunches in the library.

For Head of Children’s Library Susan Harris, Children’s Librarian Samanta Merigold and Forbes, it was a stimulating visit.

“Each September, I schedule field trips with the teachers at Palm Beach Public Elementary,” Merigold said. “All (including Susan, Mr. Forbes and I) were very excited for this visit on February 4th.  It would be the last time we would have Palm Beach Public Elementary in the current Children’s Library on a field trip.”

The Children’s Library will close after the Family Book Club program on March 21 so construction can take place on a new library.

Preschool Story Time events will continue through April 30 in the Philip Hulitar Sculpture Gardens and end the season with a pirate party.

In May, the Children’s Library will re-open in a temporary space, on the second floor of the Dixon Education Building.

In 2028, the Children’s Library will return to the newly renovated Rovensky Building.  It will be located on the ground floor with its own dedicated entrance.

“We look forward to welcoming patrons, visitors, and school field trips to our new space,” Merigold said.
