Florida woman thought 123 mph was OK because she was 'driving a Supra'

A Florida woman pulled over for driving 123 mph told police she thought she could speed because of the kind of car she was driving.

Siria Lopez blew a .23, almost three times the legal limit when she was pulled over in Bonita Springs on April 8, according to Lee County Sheriff’s Office. Body camera footage shows a deputy ordering Lopez, 25, to turn the car off and her getting out of the car, which she said belonged to the male passenger.

When she was asked why she was speeding, Lopez blamed it on the car.

“Honestly, it’s just cause he has a Supra, and then I thought it was alright to go fast and everything,” Lopez said.

A deputy responded, “I’m aware but unfortunately, turn around for me.”

Lopez bonded out of jail a few hours after getting booked. She was arrested under Florida’s new super speeder law, which has hefty fines and jail time for anyone going over 100 mph or 50 mph over the speed limit.

What is Florida’s new ‘super speeders’ law?

The law, which went into effect July 1, 2025, brings a $500 fine and up to 30 days in jail, or both, for anyone exceeding the speed limit by 50 mph or more, or driving 100 mph or more in a reckless manner commits “dangerous excessive speeding”

Second or subsequent offenses mean up to 90 days in jail, a fine of $1,000, or both. Anyone caught doing it again within five years after a prior conviction will have their driver’s license revoked for at least six months.

Also, any drivers who exceed the speed limit by 50 mph or more must now appear in court, rather than just paying a fine. The bill also allows law enforcement to impose additional fines for drivers going 30 mph or 50 mph over the posted limit at their discretion.

The first month the law was in place, 26 motorists were apprehended.
