Florida State football is about a month away from kicking off the 2026 season against New Mexico State at home. They’re bringing in a class of 34 players, and wide receivers Devin Carter and Jasen Lopez are two of the incoming freshmen that have the most buzz.
Both Carter and Lopez showed flashes during the spring of what they could potentially do once they put the pads on for games. That led head coach Mike Norvell to say he expects both to get early playing time in 2026. As the season approaches, that hasn’t changed one bit.
Norvell went to the podium on Monday to discuss the state of the team before fall camp begins on Wednesday. He mentioned again that Carter and Lopez are well on their way to being a big part of FSU’s offense early.
“It hasn’t changed. They’ve got to go do it. Where that role is is definitely on them, they are guys that have potential and ability. They are steadily learning. They are on the fast track to be able to play and just how much that is comes down to their continued growth over the next month, but I’m excited about what I’ve seen from them and definitely high expectations,” Norvell said per Warchant.
Carter comes into FSU as a legacy recruit. He’s built a reputation for being able to keep his speed throughout his breaks, create separation, and excel at tracking the ball with great hands. On the depth chart, Carter is behind speedster Micahi Danzy, but his skill set will earn him plenty of snaps.
Lopez is behind Jayvan Boggs in the slot on the depth chart. He’s a precise route runner who has the ability to create a ton of yardage after the catch. Lopez is very twitchy and can change directions quickly, and he has special teams value with multiple punt return touchdowns in high school.
Transfer quarterback Ashton Daniels needs all the weapons he can get, which makes the progression of Carter and Lopez very important. Duce Robinson and Danzy are the lead dogs, but Carter and Lopez have the potential to make this receiver group a special one, and it could happen immediately.
